Do you have obsessive thoughts? Habits? Need to recheck, recount or repeat? Do you feel compelled to have absolute control of your environment? Do you worry constantly about germs, health or dirt? You may be suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be categorised into two main areas:

OBSESSIONS are unwanted repetitive and intrusive thoughts that result in irrational fears.

COMPULSIONS can be habits or rituals that are generated by obsessions and carried out in response to fears.

A classic example of a compulsion is excessive hand-washing due to a fear of germs/contamination and illness. This is becoming very common, with the furthering of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other examples are extreme cleaning, rechecking, counting and repeating actions. The anxiety will be lessened after the action has been carried out, allowing a feeling of momentary relief.

It is also very common to have obsessive thoughts without the need to carry out a compulsive behaviour, like worrying about death, illness, germs and causing harm to others

OCD usually stems from when a person is feeling out of control and is a result of needing to feel in control. It is not always rational, and can cause a person to agonise over trying to find a cause or make sense of a past situation. This isn’t always possible to discover, as sometimes is just part of a person’s personality, for example a tidy person may become obsessive when they feel out of control in a different area of their life. Often the loss of control is something they couldn’t control like another person’s thoughts or behaviours or a worldwide pandemic.

Having awareness of how the OCD behaviours are caused can really help to lessen the effects, especially discovering the conditioned is heightened by underlying anxiety.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy concentrates not on the obsession, but on the existing anxiety, which creates the behaviours and thoughts. By easing the anxiety, the OCD simply fades away, enabling the sufferer to regain control of their lives.
